Parts that Commonly Fail

Heating elements, dryer belts, motors, door latches, and control boards are parts that commonly fail on dryers. If the clothes are not drying as well, it can be a sign that the heating element has gone bad or the dryer may not be getting enough ventilation because the filter is clogged. If the dryer is not spinning, that usually means there is a problem with the dryer belt or the motor. A failed door latch can cause the dryer to not start its cycle at all. If the dryer only does what you tell it to do sometimes, it could be a loose connection of some of the dials used to select drying preferences or a bad control board. The dryer not turning on at all also indicates a control board issue.

What are some common dryer problems?

  • Do not overfill the dryer. The dyer cannot be completely full because it needs the extra space to properly tumble and vent the clothes. Overfilled loads tax the machine and can make it wear out quicker.

  • Clean out the lint filter after every cycle and about every three months, wash off the filter with soap and water to get off any excess grime. If you are using dryer sheets or fabric softener, you will need to wash the filter about once a month. Both the sheets and the softener leave a waxy film on the clothes that can melt and be deposited onto the inside of the dryer.

  • Once a year check the dryer exhaust vent that plugs into the wall to make sure lint does not build up there. The lint build up can prevent the dryer from properly venting causing clothes to not dry as well. A blocked dryer vent is also a fire hazard.

  • Check the dryer vent cap that is outside the house to make sure there is no debris blocking the vent about once a year.

  • Do not use dryer sheets. It causes film to build up inside the dryer drum and filters impairing the machines ability to properly dry and vent.

  • Make sure to wipe down the inside of the dryer at least once a year. If you use dryer sheets you should wipe it down more often, by using a small amount of rubbing alcohol every few months. This will clean off the film left by the dryer sheets and insure that lint does not build up in the dryer.

  • Check and make sure that your dryer exhaust vent is metal instead of plastic or vinyl. The plastic and vinyl are much more likely to catch fire. If the vent is not metal then you should switch it.

  • Do not put these things in the dryer:

    • Clothes with flammable stains such as gasoline or oil because it is a potential fire hazard.

    • Clothes/towels with sand on them. The sand can get trapped between in inner and outer dryer drums which can cause damage over time.

    • Suede and any clothing/blankets with fabrics made of plastic. The heat can cause the fabric to melt in some spots and the plastic can get stuck to the inside of the dryer.

    • Anything with sequins, gemstones, glitter, or any other loose embellishments that can call off and get caught in the dryer.

    • Bras. The hooks in the bras can catch of the holes in the drum and cause damage. The underwire can also cause the same problem.

    • Rubber backed bath mats and anything with exposed rubber can cause problems. The heat causes the rubber to degrade/melt and the crumbles can get stuck in the dryer.
