Parts that Commonly Fail
Some common problems on dishwashers are wash motor failure, drain pumps failure, sump leaks, door leaks, bad heating elements, water inlet valves, control boards and user interfaces. If a dishwasher is not washing as well anymore it is likely that the wash motor is weak, the heating element is worn out, or there are blockages in the wash arms. Sump leaks are usually caused by seals on the bottom of the dishwasher wearing out. A door leak can come from the door becoming misaligned. If the dishwasher does not let in water or if it continually fills, this is a good sign that the water valve is bad. The overfill of water can also cause leaks. It is difficult to know if a control board is bad if you do not have the right tools to test for it. This is because a bad control board can lead to the failure of other parts or make those parts appear to have failed. A good sign that the user interface is bad is if the buttons on the dishwasher have to be mashed very hard to read your input or if the dishwasher wont come on at all. These two symptoms usually indicate either a control board or user interface failure.
What are some common dishwasher problems?
Clean the filters inside the dishwasher around once a month by removing them and washing them off. Newer dishwashers all have easily removable filters that twist to get out. If you have an older dishwasher, the filter may be screwed in. In this case, I would recommend not trying to remove the filter because you can easily damage other components of the dishwasher in doing so. The nonremovable filters can also be wiped off from the top if you see build up. Unclean filters can put further strain on the drain pump and also allow for mold to grow inside of the dishwasher.
Scrape any excess food off of dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. The food can make the filters get dirty faster and can potentially slip past the filters and start to put strain on the drain motor. This can also lead to blockages in the drain hose.
Every two months, clean the dishwasher by running it on the highest heat setting while it is empty. Many dishwasher have a sanitize button that will best the best cycle to run.
When you are loading your dishwasher you want to also take a look at the door seal. Build up on the seal can cause it to degrade/mold and can lead to your dishwasher leaking.
Try to always open the door from the middle. If the door is yanked open from the sides, it will get out of alignment over time and will leak. The is NO FIX for a dishwasher that has a door out of alignment. You will have to get a new dishwasher.
Do not wash dishes that have stickers on them. The plastic fibers will get caught in the spray arms and cause blockages which will impair your dishwasher's ability to clean. The plastic can also get caught in the filters and even make their way into the sump can cause drain pump/motor issues.
Be careful to not scrape off the coating that covers the racks. If the coating is removed the racks can rust.
Do not put bleach in the dishwasher. It can some of the internal plastic parts, such as hoses and seals, to degrade and crack.
